I so love the official April 2020 National Poetry Month poster this year! The poster was designed by Samantha Aikman, a 10th grader from Vermont, who was the winner of this year's National Poetry Month Contest for Students. It features a line from the poem "Remember" by current U.S. Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo: “Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.” Great line, right? It has inspired me to do a little pondering and decide which poem, out of all the great poems, is my favorite, so I can share it with you here. Hmmmmm......
Do you ever find yourself wondering things like...
It is absolutely incredible for fact lovers! Why?
Hey! I just found a very interesting looking recipe for plastic bag ice cream over in the Project Library on that Makercamp website I mentioned in a blog post a few days ago. I just checked, and I have all the ingredients except for the heavy cream, but I do have half-and-half, which is similar to heavy cream - I think - so I just might try to make my first ever homemade ice cream. I'm feeling optimistic, because how bad can it be - even if it fails - when it's ice cream? Even if it comes out very soft it still might be delicious, I mean you never know, it could come out tasting like Donnelly's. Check out the recipe and try it yourself, if it's okay with your folks, of course :)
Essential workers, we all know them. Folks who are getting up every day and risking their health for us, for our society, for the good of others. There are not enough words to convey how much we all owe these heroes, but this video is a little bit of a start. Merci! I am so missing the MMS Maker Kids and Maker Mondays! But just because we aren't together doesn't mean you can't create something that occupies your hands AND thrills your mind! I've been keeping an eye on things over at the Family Maker Camp at Make.co and I've seen some amazing things, like a show on John Collins, the Paper Airplane Guy. His paper airplane skills are extraordinary! I was so inspired that I am going to attempt to make my own fleet of planes using the instructions below. Yes, I'm going to jump into aerodynamics and try to defy gravity with my little creations. I admit I don't know a ton about lift, or thrust, or drag, or balance, but once I've spent a few hours tinkering around I hope to be an expert! Why not do the same? It is Maker Monday after all! Stuck inside on a rainy and chilly Friday?
Don't despair! Our beautiful Adirondack summer is headed our way, so why not get ready for glorious weather by looking at an incredible collection of panoramas and photospheres from all over the world? Check out 360Cities. It is the coolest. Use the search box at the top to search for any place that you can think of - I started with "Adirondacks" and then "Acadia", and my mind was totally blown away by the huge selection of panoramas, photospheres, and 360 videos I found. Click on any of the pics and it will open up in a special viewer where you can explore, and explore, and explore. I'm headed back right now to look up "NYC' and "London" - enjoy! LOL! This short video just did two great things for me; first it cracked me up, and there is nothing that gets the day off to a better start then a laugh, right? And then, it reminded me that the thing I really really REALLY need to do today is to GET OFF THESE SCREENS for a bit and read a real hold-it-in-my-hands, turn-the-pages book! I'm going to grab a book, a few pets, and turn all technology off for at least 4 hours! Do you think I can do it? To be honest I'm not sure I can do it...4 entire hours? Wish me luck! And watch the book trailer for It's a Book" by Lane Smith below. And then...maybe turn off your screens for a few hours and jump into a book? How do you celebrate April Fools Day during a quarantine? I think the answer is extremely gently, and creatively. I don't think anyone's heart can handle a serious jolt right now, and clearly joking about being sick, or pulling pranks that could hurt someone or are mean-spirited are completely out of the question - as they should be all the time. I do think you however that it's okay to help lighten the mood in your household with some lighthearted pranks. Like what, you may ask? This article from The Spokesman-Review, a newspaper from Spokane, Washington has some great ideas! Interested in how we even started celebrating this crazy day? Check out the video below! Don't forget this popcorn time opportunity! Check out the schedule below: |
