This novel, based on a real story, is about 7 year-old Virginia, who lives in a filthy hut with her family. Although they are desperately poor, like most of the indigenous people in Ecuador, Virginia is happy with her simple, tough life. When her Mother tells her that she is going to work for a “mestizo” (light-skinned, rich, and of Spanish origin) couple she is hesitant to leave her family but thrilled at the hope that she could
make enough money to but a new roof for the hut. But what Virginia doesn’t realize is that she is actually being sold to the couple as a slave and it will be many many years before she sees her parents and the hut again. This book was fascinating and uplifting and I highly recommend that you read it :)
